Biography
Matej Hrovat was brought upon this world in the year 1974. A pianist all his life under the guidance of prof. Darinka Bernetic, his repertoire includes such classics as Beethoven's piano sonatas (Waldstein, Moonlight, Pathetique), Chopin's Polonaise A-flat Major (plus various popular Preludes and Waltzes), Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 and Ravel's incredibly difficult "Gaspard de la Nuit"; The speed record was Chopin's "Minute Waltz" performed in 53 seconds. He has also studied the playing style of Chico Marx, Scott Joplin's ragtimes and plays many evergreens arrangements.
Keen on composing from the very beginning; in the first decade he wrote mainly for piano solo (Variations in d minor). Then, with the arrival of affordable PC audio cards in 1992 he sought to harness the power of the machine to this end. The new electronic sounds were soon heard on a radio show about computer music. Experiments with good old trackers concluded in "Concentus Primus for grand piano and tracker". Then, getting hold of a proper synth he pursued the classical form (resulting in such works as the synth sonata "Endless Moment", Prelude & Fugue No. 1 in e minor and others - see the Solo section. Then the true power (Roland XP-80) came, opening unlimited vistas of compositional possibilities that brought the CD "In Search of Harmony Horizon". Yet more synths and gear arrived ....... He performed his music live at various events, scored a platform game (George the Starfish Elephant), films (Faces of Africa, The Collector), kids' stories (Tales for Lana) and is currently working on a new solo project and some piano compositions.
On the intellectual front; in 2000 he has graduated in Computer Science at the University of Ljubljana, developing a prototype of notation OCR software ScanNotan as his graduation project; can even do some computer graphics, animation and webpage design (well, you're looking at it!) and works as a developer for the software company Adacta. Since '95 he's been stalking the Net as "Aziraphal".
